Derek Lawton as been providing proffesional driving tuition since February 2000 for both learner and corporate clients.* Start at 16 on our safe off road area in Newton le Willows and get the basic car controls skills, like clutch control, gear changing, steering and even reversing before taking to the road. Ideal for those that want to get that head start or who may be a bit nervous off other traffic.
* Derek Lawton can also offer both Manual and Automatic driving lessons. Something which most other instructors are unable to do. So if you don't like changing gear yourself then give us a call.
*Pass plus. A six hour cousre with no test to sit but will give you that extra experinece and can reduce your insurance premiums.
*Refresher lessons if you have been out of the driving seat for some time.
*Corporate driver training courses for car an van drivers.

The practical driving test was initially introduced in the UK in 1935. During the intervening years several amendments have been made to keep the test up to date and make it more relevant to producing drives capable of being safe road users in the 21st century. The test will include an eye sight test (if you fail this the test will not continue).
Newly qualified drivers (especially young drivers) are at more risk in the first year after passing the test than at any other time in their driving career. One in five will have an accident. Pass Plus is a scheme that was introduced by the Driving Standards Agency in connection with most of the UK's leading insurance companies.
Do not stop opposite vehicles or obstructions if such positioning would not allow the emergency vehicle to pass (diagram 2). If you are about to emerge from a side roadand see or hear an emergency vehicle on the major road, do not try to emerge until it passes (diagram 3). If, whilst travelling across a traffic light junction, you become aware of an emergency vehicle approaching from either side, do not brake harshly. This maycause an accident. If you cannot stop by gradual braking keep travelling across the junction.

Derek is a fantastic driving instructor, he is patient, helpful and knowledgeable. I used to get so nervous before lessons but Derek made me feel at ease straight away and I gained so much confidence on the road. Also passed my test first time thanks to him. I simply could not have had a better driving instructor than Derek - he is skilled, patient, supportive and ensures that you are well prepared for your test. Having passed first time I can confirm this all pays off! He's also a really great man. You want someone professional, calm, knowledgeable of the driving routes and what to expect from the examiners, derek is on point. Just remember his rules of thumb and do your own online study to aid your practical improvement. I passed with 1 minor of braking hard at a traffic light. I did 2 major roundabouts 4 mini and passed. Roundabouts was my weakest point in driving. . Thanks Derek.

If you are looking to learn to drive. You definitely shouldn't look any further than Derek Lawton. He makes the lessons enjoyable, and he's professional yet manages to put even the most anxious and nervous learners (me) at ease. As an older learner I wasn't convinced I would ever manage to pass my test but with his patience and amazing instruction, he gave me both the skills and confidence in my ability, and I passed my test 1st time!
