Keys to Freedom is a local Bolton driving school, which was established in 2007 by the current owner Mel Travers. Our mission is to teach you to become a confident driver, who is able to drive in a safe and responsible manner. We also want you to learn to drive with as few lessons as possible, and pass your driving test first time.

I was recommended to Keys to freedom by friends of the family because of the success they had with passing their tests.
Mel was a great instructor who was always reliable and on time for lessons. He was clear at explaining what needed doing and the board diagrams were very helpful.

As event designers we LOVE this space! We designed the Spirit of Barbados gala in 2017 for the Embassy of Barbados and the ballroom gives an amazing canvas to build on! I was lucky to have found Mel, I can 100% vouch for him, I managed to pass first time ( I’m 43 ) and if he got me through it then he is practically a miracle worker! Thanks Mel you have been amazing teacher, fun, informative and patient, but gave me a kick where I needed it. Bloody brilliant!!! See you soon for motorway lessons, you haven’t got rid of me yet!

Very helpful and understanding even when I was beating my self up thinking I can't do it or got it wrong helped me a lot with being clam and always telling me take my time and not over think it, and helped me a lot on test day as nerves did get me and helped me belive in my self that I could do it, and talk me through a lot to understand before and after we did manovers, and helped me pass 1st thank you mel

I can definitely 100% recommend Mel I came to him from another driving instructor and basically I didn’t have much confidence in myself or my driving, Mel showed me easier methods of driving and he brought back all of my confidence he has had so much patience with me and I’m so happy to say I have passed my driving test with only three minors.

I recently passed my test in Bolton with Keys to Freedom and could not recommend them highly enough. In particular the way Mel (my instructor) not only taught me to drive and prepared me for my test but also put me in the right frame of mind to go out and pass the test. I've had 2 other instructors in the past and neither of them prepared me for the test mentally the way that Mel did. I can't thank him enough.

By far the most patient and best instructor ever. Goes the extra mile to make sure you have all the skills you need for not just the test day but there after. I've recommended him highly and my closest friend pass first time after having bad experiences elsewhere! I could not recommend Mel and keys to freedom any more I just wish he was in Buckinghamshire for my other friends to learn!

I 100% recommend Mel to be your driving instructor. During my first lesson I was so so nervous and Mel instantly helped to settle my nerves and grow in confidence as the weeks went on. Anything I was unsure with he would always explain in great detail to ensure it was understood. Whenever I was feeling stressed about certain manoeuvres he would calm me down by telling me a story or making up a (bad) joke, which seemed to help.

I honestly can not thank Mel enough. He's such a patient, kind and genuine man, I don't know how he's put up with me! I use to hate my driving lessons I use to be so nervous but Mel helped me to enjoy them and has had me in stitches laughing on lessons. I passed my test today with only 2 minors something I never thought I would achieve. I think now I will actaully miss having my driving lesson and hearing Mels weekly bad jokes. Thank you so much Mel
