Driving schools are not all the same, as anyone who has changed driving schools whilst learning to drive will know how different instructors can be. The biggest mistake that most pupils make is choosing the cheapest driving school. If you were choosing a college or school to be taught anything else you would look for the BEST and then take the price into consideration after you had looked at a few options and decided what you could afford. If you pay bottom dollar for anything, how good do you expect it to be?
When I stared Black & White Driving School in 2006 I was intent of giving the highest quality tuition. People who came to me having been taught by various schools came with gaping holes in their knowledge, poor technique and stories almost beyond belief.
Most pupils are nervous when they first start. They are going to be sitting close to and be taught by a total stranger. This means they have to feel comfortable and be made to relax in order that they enjoy as well as learn whilst under the instructors guidance.
The pupil and or the parent wants to be able to trust the instructor, get value for money and feel confident for and after passing their test.
What you should do before start is:-

Thank you Steve for all your help with overcoming my fear of driving on motorways. I learned to drive 30 years ago but after a near miss on the motorway I stopped driving on motorways 17 years ago. I had developed a real phobia and I honestly thought I would never be able to drive on motorways again. Steve helped me. He made me feel safe and taught me new driving skills.
With these skills, my confidence increased and my fear decreased. Steve also helped me face my fears and enabled me to plan for 'What's the worst that could happen?' He showed me that by giving myself distance between me and the car in front, I would have precious time to react to any potential issue. This would make me and those around me safer. I can't recommend Steve enough as a driving instructor, I was so nervous at first and it took me a long time to gain confidence and Steve was very welcoming and took a kind approach to teaching. He's a good laugh and makes sure that you aren't just test ready, you are road ready. He will make sure that you are a safe driver and that you feel confident to drive anywhere in the world.
I recently passed my test and was glad to have Steve on my journey of driving, it's amazing that I passed but also sad that lessons are over. If you wanna be a good driver, pick Steve as your instructor!

What a wonderful chap Steve is! I needed 'refresher' lessons after a 24 year break since learning, and I was terrified. He quickly made me feel at ease, had a great attitude and before I knew it, I was driving! He is patient, professional and funny! We had a laugh and I can now drive! Win, win! Thanks Steve!

Best driving school in Brighton. Steve helped me to go from a nervous beginner to a calm and competent driver. He goes above and beyond in his teaching and is extremely calm, patient and generally a joy to be around in lesson time. I was so nervous, it took me a while to become confident enough to pass my test. Steve never gave up on me and he helped me get past the mental blocks that I had towards driving.
He is an excellent instructor with a passion for teaching. It's so important to have an instructor that wants to be in the car with you, not just someone clocking in and out. I am so pleased to have my license, it's such a huge achievement for me. The only downside is that I will miss our weekly lessons. Thank you Black and White driving school.

Steve has been such a pleasure to learn with. The way Steve describes things throughout the lessons and his teachings are crystal clear. Steve has really made me aware of all the little details about the car itself, to road signs, my surroundings and so on. Most importantly he has taught me how to drive safely and consciously. He has exceptional patience, which I was incredibly grateful for.

I phoned Steve back in October 2020 to put my daughter on waiting list as she wasn't going to be 17 years until February. Steve was very happy to do this and then lockdown happened and my daughter couldn't get going till May 2021. Steve phoned me several times on updates on when he would have a slot which suited us and once date and time was arranged she had a weekly 2 hour lesson.
Her first hour free and when my daughter was happy with Steve we paid for blocks of 10 lessons. We both highly recommended Steve as a driving instructor professional at all times was calm with my daughter and she has now passed first time. We were recommended to Steve by a friend for their son and he passed first time the next day plus I have recommended Steve to several of my friends too. Thank you once again Steve on getting my daughter passed first time

I would highly recommend Black and White Driving School as Steve is a very professional and communcative instructor and I always felt very safe with him next to me. Even though I was a fairly anxious driver, Steve excelled at keeping me calm whilst still pushing me out of my comfort zone just enough to gradually build up my confidence. He was always extremely patient, encouraging and non-judgemental, ensuring that I learned from my mistakes instead of getting frustrated by them. Steve was always great to chat to and since there was always such a relaxed and friendly atmosphere to our lessons, I finished every lesson feeling much better than I did at the beginning of it! Steve is a great driving instructor. Really encouraging and patience and put me at ease straight away. After not driving for 10 years I had a few refresher lessons. I now feel at ease and confident behind the wheel and couldn't have wished for a better driving instructor. I thoroughly recommend Steve as a person and driving instructor. Thanks to Steve's brilliant instruction I just passed my driving test first time, with ZERO minors! An achievement I'm quite blown away by! I had put off learning to drive until my thirties, the idea of it made me nervous, but a friend (who had suffered terrible anxiety with previous instructors) recommended Steve for his ability to make it a stress-free, calm, safe, relaxed yet methodical and even enjoyable experience.
He is very knowledgeable, skilled and attentive, not only at driving but also how people effectively learn. When I started learning to drive with Steve I was glad he was someone I can talk to as we were born in the same century. I was terrified but Steve was always so encouraging and kept my spirits up with words of encouragement and praise but also good with criticism when appropriate. There were plenty tears when I couldn't do a manoeuvre and he always had a pack of tissues handy.. Gave me a lot of tips and from getting terrified when I knew he was parked outside to actually ready and waiting for him and ready to drive..yes I started enjoying myself . Passed my test today after a few attempts and without him (and Vivienne) I couldn't have done it! Thank you Steve and I can't recommend you enough..

I first heard about Steve through some family friends whilst I was looking for a driving instructor in Brighton back in 2016. They couldn’t recommend him enough and as I had heard mixed reviews about other driving schools, Steve sounded like a sensible person to start my lessons with.
Steve has always been very calm, patient and supportive of me.
I temporarily moved out of the UK half way through my driving lesson journey, and when I came back I knew I would go straight back to Steve to start my lessons again. I found I lacked a lot of confidence when I started driving again but Steve couldn’t of handled the situation better and always tried to make me feel comfortable and safe throughout my lessons.
Steve was always thinking of new ways we could overcome areas of the lessons that I found challenging, which shows that he really invests in his pupils and genuinely wants you to become a confident and knowledgeable driver. I passed first time with Steve and whenever anybody asks me about driving instructors I will always recommend him!

I passed my driving test first time, with 5 minors, after just 4 months learning with Steve. This a guy who really understands how to teach. Every lesson is pitched to be slightly more difficult than the last so that they feel challenging, but also rewarding as you never feel out of your depth. I would highly recommend Steve as a driving instructor as he is so patient and thorough in his approach. Not only does he teach you how to drive, but he incorporates mental tactics which help massively with keeping your focus and reducing your stress levels. Steve is an absolutely excellent driving instructor. I had a 100% positive experience and would highly recommend him to anyone, including to older learners like myself. He teaches not only the technical but also the psychological side of driving. For me, this was extremely valuable, and indeed crucial to passing my test. My main challenges were overcoming fears of making mistakes, building confidence and managing nerves. Steve really helped me to shut down what he called the “board meetings” in my head and helped me focus on finding and maintaining a calm and confident head space, where my nerves wouldn’t get in the way of my driving skills.

Steve has been teaching me to drive since the beginning of March, up until yesterday that is, when I passed my test!!!
