Man has always looked for easier ways of accomplishing difficult strenuous tasks and one can easily think back to the Stone Age man and the invention of the lever. It was Archimedes who finally recognised the importance of the lever and his famous statement "Give me but one firm spot on which to stand and I will move the earth" is well known.
The following represent many of the questions we are frequently asked both by Employers and Employees in relation to materials handling training. There is nothing laid down in law about this but the Approved Code of Practice states that "refresher training should be given". For this reason, many employers arrange for refresher training and re-testing at somewhere between 3 and 5 year intervals.
They update the previous 1992 regulations and this time have an accompanying set of regulations in the form of the LOLER statutes. The main requirement of PUWER is to plan the intended use of all work equipment. This will take the form of a basic risk assessment identifying what the equipment is to be used for, who will use it, how it will be used and the hazards that may arise from it's use both to the operator and others.
The ACOP has not changed but the guidance now incorporates the 1998 PUWER / LOLER regulations as they apply to forklift trucks and In addition the publication "Safety in Working with Lift Trucks" (HSG6) has been replaced and incorporated into the guidance note. There are several changes that affect the employment/ training of Forklift operators such as the introduction of seat belts and the clarification of the thorough examination rules. You can download a free copy of the new ACOP and Guidance and two useful guide's in PDF for both employers and for Forklift operators below.
